Modernity and the Holocaust

The topic of the diploma thesis Modernity and the Holocaust refers to the book of the same name by the Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. In this book, Zykmund Bauman analyzes the relationship between modernist thinking and the Holocaust from a sociological perspective. In my diploma thesis I deal with the design of the Documentation Center, for which a closed architectural competition was announced in Brno. The topic is a continuation of the previous project, in which we analyzed mainly Bauman's work. These analyzes helped us to continue designing the center with a completely new perspective of thinking not only about the society, but also the architecture itself. In my project, I work with the issue of borders and barriers in connection with the division of people and spaces. I am looking for a ways of creatig the space that, by its very nature, call into question what is the real meaning of borders and barriers. In my proposal, I work with the idea of borders at different levels. As at the urban, service or material level.In my projcet I am disrupting som of the barriers and borders, I am creating new ones, but I am also reversing the relation ship between each other.
Modernity and the Holocaust

The diploma thesis entitled Modernity and the Holocaust deals with the design of the Holocaust Documentation Center in Moravia. The project was preceded by an analytical part in the form of a pre-diploma project, which examined the city of Brno in connection with the issue of modernist thinking in society. The result of this theoretical work was, in addition to defining the scheme of the term "Otherness", also a map of the so-called "second" often rejected Brno. The diploma project focuses on the interconnectedness of the Holocaust and modern society. I try to find answers to the questions of this issue mainly through architecture and I apply my ideas to the design of the documentation center. Thanks to the findings from previous analyzes, the work gets to the topic of regulated and unregulated spaces, which the concept of the whole building is based on. The building is thus divided into two functional units. The lower part functions as an unregulated elemental structure, which becomes the life of the building. It interconnects individual functions and offers many possibilities of movement and division of space. This part is made of steel and, unlike the other part, looks much looser. The second part is the mass of the exhibition, which is lifted to the highest part of the object. This part is a controlled and regulated area. Thanks to its massive mass and concrete facade, it works looks hard and thus creates contrast not only in the level of operation, but also in the visual level. These parts work in a mutual relationship and thus create one unit, which is a combination of exhibition space and additional program such as a cafe, children's center, library or restaurant.
Intra-individual variability in perception of otherness

This dissertation focuses on intra-individual variability in the perception of otherness, specifically on the variability of experienced emotions toward diverse representatives of otherness in relation to attitudes and personality functioning. At the beginning of the thesis, the theoretical background is introduced, especially the concept of otherness. A total of 205 respondents from the general population and the population of people with mental disorders participated in the study. The research was conducted in three phases, and the results are presented in three studies. In the first phase, the semi-structured interview assessing the severity levels of personality functioning (STiP-5.1) was translated into Czech, and its psychometric properties were verified. In the second phase, the association between attitudes toward minorities and the level of personal functioning impairment was examined. The last, third phase focused on the intra-individual variability of experienced emotions (disgust, empathy, anger, compassion, pity, respect) toward different representatives of otherness (e.g., close ones, Romani, migrants, people with mental disorders) and its relation to personality functioning and attitudes, using the experience sampling method. Establishing relationships in case of Pramen home clients in general and specifically through the volunteer project "Open Doors"

The thesis deals with the topic of disability and volunteering. The subject of research is to identify the difficulties in establishing relationships of people a diagnosis of intellectual and combined disabilities who live in an institutional environment for a long time. Regarding to that the "Open Door" volunteer project was launched in Domov Pramen, which aims to help clients of the service with gaining social contacts, I will look for difficulties on two levels. The first is the general level, where I will focus on client's life who live in this residential service. The second level is specific, where I will try to identify opportunities and difficulties within the volunteer project "Open Doors". Otherness of Pupils from Migrant Backgrounds as a Topic for Story-Based Teaching

This thesis examines the topic of teaching the theme of otherness of pupils from migrant backgrounds to younger school-aged children, specifically through narrative engagement utilizing the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking methods. Within the framework of action research, reading lessons were designed and executed to explore various facets of the situations faced by pupils from migrant backgrounds. This educational intervention is meant to facilitate comprehension of these pupils' circumstances and foster the overall acceptance of them. An analysis of the outcomes for each lesson is presented, also the outcomes were evaluated in terms of pedagogical reflection. Moreover, two of them were evaluated by another teacher. Topic relevant literature for children was thoroughly examined and incorporated into the research findings. The reading lessons were based on the following four titles: Kiko and the Secret of the Paper Butterfly, Maja and Kim, The Arab of the Future and Eric. The following methods were employed: unstructured observation, thematic analysis, semi-structured interviews, and content analysis of the lesson outcomes. Through two textile objects, which are performatively brought and installed in Lužánky Park in Brno for the purposes of its defense, the diploma thesis 4 Elements reveals and further develops the designed reality and mythology of four colorful elements – principles – roles – identities – anti-heroic demons – avatars: #ccff00, #000000, #c0c0c0 and #cc99ff, as actors with symbolic potential, with whom it experiments as a form of visual scenario for a future LARP game. Part of the work is a circular object, which is a transport case for the second spherical object, with the fact that both of them function as interconnected works as well as independently. The circle is a camping blanket, map or gateway to the designed reality of the 4 elements, and the sphere concentrates their collage-like imaginative memetic picture medallions around its axis. Textile rhizomes or long fibers leading from both objects connect the objects with the landscape, with other planetary actors. The work is based on schools of thought such as posthumanism, new materialism, material feminism, climate crisis and post-anthropocentric contemporary philosophy or media theory and visual studies.

The diploma thesis builds on the knowledge gained during the preparation of the pre-diploma thesis in the previous semester. The main outputs for the thesis were the book Modernity and the Holocaust by the Polish sociologist Zygmund Bauman and the concept of „otherness“ defined by the architect Peter Eisenman when designing the Jewish Memorial in Berlin. On the basis of these findings, I prepared maps that dealt with otherness from the perspective of majority and minority societies and maps of the spread of the Jewish community in the city of Brno, which I subsequently based my diploma project on. The task of the diploma project is to design a Holocaust Documentation Centre in Moravia on a predetermined plot of land in Brno. A closed architectural competition was announced for this project. In the design of the above mentioned building, I try to capture the fluidity and changeability of the human community through the architectural language. I think of human society as a continuity and fluidity of individual cultures defined as minority and majority societies. Through architecture I try to express the intermingling, fluidity and instability of the hierarchy of minority and majority communities. In doing so, I create ambiguously dominant and submissive spaces. From one place a space may appear submissive, whereas from another it may appear more dominant.
